In late July 2024, I arrived in Alaska feeling terribly exhausted from the past months of work and travel and couldn't summon up the motivation to do much of anything. But certain places can be pretty magical in giving you exactly what you need to recover. I spent the first few days housesitting just outside of Fairbanks, and there was a lovely porch with a bird feeding station and one of the most beautiful birch snags that I have ever laid eyes on. The woodpeckers seemed to agree, and I got some great photos of a Hairy Woodpecker there. By the end of that first week, I had bought some paper and started sketching.

"The Woodpeckers of Interior Alaska" is a gouache painting that shows the five species of woodpecker that you can expect to encounter in Fairbanks and the rest of the Interior: Northern Flicker, American Three-toed Woodpecker, Black-backed Woodpecker, Hairy Woodpecker, and Downy Woodpecker.
